About Chiricahua Wilderness

Chiricahua Wilderness

The Chiricahua Wilderness, part of the Coronado National Forest, spans over 87,700 acres in southeastern Arizona. It is renowned for its striking rock formations known as 'Sky Islands,' which rise abruptly from the desert floor to create a unique ecological environment. These formations have been carved over millions of years by volcanic activity and erosion, creating an array of spires, balanced rocks, and hoodoos. The wilderness supports a rich diversity of plant and animal life, including species typically found in both the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts, as well as mountain species. Visitors can find extensive hiking trails offering spectacular views of these formations and surrounding valleys. Birdwatching is popular here, with opportunities to see rare species like the Elegant Trogon. Historically, the area was home to the Chiricahua Apache, and remnants of their presence can still be found. The wilderness offers solitude and a refuge for those seeking a remote experience away from the busy modern world.
